Senate version of farm bill would benefit Michigan farmers

Michigan State University leaders were pleased when the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry passed its version of the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013 (farm bill) on May 14. Although it was necessary to cut  $23 billion from the legislation, the Senate version maintains support for the Hatch and Smith-Lever programs, both of which are essential to capacity-building research and Extension programming.

Energy-efficient greenhouse production a goal for Michigan’s fourth largest agriculture sector

Michigan is third in the country in floriculture, and despite the climate and light limitations on floriculture production, it is Michigan’s fourth largest agriculture sector.  Michigan State University (MSU) Extension and Project GREEEN (Generating Research and Extension to meet Economic and Environmental Needs) are the platform for industry-improving research to lower producers’ energy costs for heating and lighting.
